Lessons learnt: Solidarity & Gratification

It is the end of year 2004. By this time, more than 80,000 lives in Indonesia were taken by the tsunami in Aceh. Ten of thousands more in other countries in South Asia.

The whole Indonesia are greatly affected by this horrible event. Brothers and sisters from the other provinces, from other islands in the country have been coming to Aceh to help the live victims. Money are sent from everywhere to ease the burden due to this disaster. Many cancelled their new year parties. Would you dare laugh and cheer for the new year countdown, while you know there are thousands of tears are shed for the precious things lost. The President requested to all Indonesians that year 2005 to be the year of solidarity and unification to rebuild our nation. Indonesia had been through many natural disasters and other horrible events, so that it requires the whole people to stand together to make a better country to live in.

To some extent, the world is also affected. International donors and developed countries have been organizing fund raising and sending the monies to Indonesia, Thailand, Srilanka, India (the most affected countries). Personally, I appreciate many concerns from my friends, collegues, scholarship agents (Fulbright and Institute of International Education), and even strangers.

This horrible disaster can happen everywhere. We can only pray. We can only be grateful to what we have now, no matter how much or little we are thankful for what and where we are now.
